Dentzz Dental | A Guide to Your Toothpaste

Every bright day begins with the daily ritual of brushing our teeth. It leaves us feeling fresh and clean, but how many of us know the actual contents of our toothpaste? What goes into this paste that we daily apply onto our brushes and push into our mouths?

The one ingredient that we know our toothpaste contains is fluoride, which protects our teeth. The amount of fluoride in a paste varies from brand to brand but it usually makes up less than five percent of the whole tube. Excess fluoride is bad especially for children, thus it is important to check the fluoride percentage in the toothpaste you use.

One of the biggest ingredients in toothpaste is water! Surprised? Water is what gives the toothpaste quantity since most of us like brushing with lots of paste. Water is added to the mixture till it reaches a particular volume or thickness.

The third component of most toothpaste is chalk i.e limestone, the same thing that teachers use on boards in the classroom. This chalk acts as an abrasive, rubbing the plaque off the teeth. However, sometimes it can be over abrasive and cause your teeth to develop small holes, which can lead to tooth decay. In gel toothpastes, however, hydrated silica is used instead of chalk and has the same abrasive function, but is more gentle.

Many toothpastes contain titanium dioxide which is found in paint or optical whitening dyes found in washing machine bleach. Both these make the teeth look refreshingly whiter after brushing although the effect may not last for long.

All of these ingredients are tested and used in a specific proportion to create a toothpaste that is safe for use. However, visit our experts at Dentzz Dental to see how you can choose the toothpaste that best suits you, depending upon the quality of your teeth.
